Storytelling: What makes good Story

Additions added Weekly

Synthesized from common storytelling frameworks used in writing, film, and oral narrative traditions. These elements work together; weakening one usually weakens the whole.

1. A Compelling Character

At least one character the audience can care about. This doesn’t mean “likable,” but relatable, interesting, or understandable. We need someone whose journey we want to follow.

2. A Clear Goal or Desire

The protagonist must want something—love, freedom, justice, survival, truth. This goal gives the story direction and momentum.

3. Conflict

Something stands in the way of that goal. Conflict can be:

External (another character, society, nature)

Internal (fear, guilt, doubt) Without conflict, there’s no story—only a situation.

4. Stakes

The audience must know what can be gained or lost. Stakes answer the question: Why does this matter?

Higher or more personal stakes create stronger engagement.

5. A Structured Plot

Events are arranged intentionally, not randomly. Most good stories include:

¨  A beginning (setup)

¨  A middle (complications)

¨  An end (resolution)

Structure creates tension and release.

We are building a Story Teller’s Cadre because stories are how humans make meaning.

Long before institutions, before technologies, before systems, stories were how knowledge, values, and wisdom were carried forward. This cadre is not about performance for its own sake.

It is about cultivating people who can hold attention, speak truth, and shape experience through narrative.

We are looking for storytellers who understand that a story is not just something you tell — it is something you host.

It requires presence.

It requires responsibility.

And it requires an awareness of the audience and the moment in which the story is being shared.

Our vision is to develop a group of storytellers who can be invited into many kinds of spaces — community, educational, ceremonial, and professional — and offer stories that are grounded, human, and meaningful.

The audition process has two levels.

The first is about discovering raw storytelling potential — voice, truth, and narrative instinct.

The second is about readiness — the ability to adapt, take direction, and represent this cadre with integrity.

Not everyone who auditions will be selected, and not everyone selected will be immediately bookable.

This is intentional.

We are building something durable, and we believe in clarity, care, and craft.

If you are here, you are already part of the conversation.

Our role today is simply to listen.

About SurpriseStorytellers

Why I Love It

I love helping individuals to be able to share their meaningful, life changing  stories..

My Mission: Create living books.

I have co-authored several books, each having amazing stories to tell. What I realized is that I enjoyed the interview far more that writing or reading their books. I thought, why not find a way to let the real people hear these wonderful stories from other real people.
